February 2008
So I never been to Arizona before. But my first travel job took me to the little town of Glendale, AZ to work the 2008 Superbowl. After finishing up and heading back to New Mexico, I decided to take a side trip and spend a couple of days at the Grand Canyon. It was only about 45 minutes off my normal route back.
I was in awe when I first walked upon it. It was so picture perfect, like nothing I’ve ever seen before. It was February, so there was still snow and ice on the trails. That made some trails kind of risky to go down, especially the ones along the inside of the canyon. The weather was cool in the morning, but warmed up nicely by afternoon.
I mostly walked along the rim trails, stopping at some points that called to have a picture taken. It’s kind of crazy that you can literally walk up to the edge of the canyon where it just drops straight down and there’s no safety, fence, gate, or anything.
Along the trail, I came upon Kolb Studio. I was able to take a tour of this 5-story house. It was built right on the edge of the canyon back in the day when the Grand Canyon was first being developed as a tourist attraction. The studio was started by Emery and Ellsworth Kolb. It was a studio, but they lived there too. It had bedrooms, bathrooms, a kitchen, everything a house would have. We got to see Emery’s office, a sitting area that had ceiling-to-floor windows offering a great view of the canyon, and the studio area where they took pictures of people going down the trails on mules.
Kolb Studio has a very interesting historical background. You should check it out if you ever go to the Grand Canyon. Meanwhile, here are some pics I took while on the trip.
